30th Dec – Surf and Yabbies
This morning we awoke to find the weather a little overcast
but fortunately there was no wind about (can’t say the same for the boys), we
headed for Arrawarra where we found the waves were huge, way too big for the
boys so we headed for Woolgoolga for a smaller set in the bay. Since we were
feeling a little lethargic (not hung over) and the water was cold we just stood
in the shore break and enjoyed watching the boys do their thing. They are
getting very confident, so we often have to call them in as they go out way too
far for our comfort...they don’t care the least! Riley is very efficient and
can easily stand on his nipper’s board surfing it into the shore from way out
the back! Aiden is like a little whippet, getting every wave possible, his
skills have evolved rapidly and he is almost ready for his first composite
board, but don’t tell him that! When we returned to the camper our lovely
neighbours (Bill, Andy, Kyle and Crystal) from Brisbane invited us yabbying at Red
Rock, it is just north (10min) was a lovely spot to go and visit (if we had our
pick, this would be the place to stay). This caravan park unfortunately is very
expensive, there was little to choose from 4 months ago! On a side note we are
loving all the wildlife, this morning we had 3 Kangaroos and 30 Lorikeets in
our annex for breakfast, and Aiden even got to hand feed 2 Kookaburras
breakfast!
Back to the Yabbies, this was a very cool experience, to get
to the spot we had to swim across the river over to a sand bar, then you look
for little holes along the water’s edge and using a yabby pump you suck the little
tykes up. We collected about 100 of them for our neighbour to use as bait. He
has a fish tank with a pump and they keep them live ready for fishing. All this
fun occurred whilst it was pouring down with rain, now that’s something you don’t
usually do in Perth. Of course our afternoon would not be complete with out our friends the lorikeets.
