18th Dec – Spider, Lennox Heads, Surfing!
Back from our regular morning run/walk on the beach we had
started our ritual “pack up” when Riley found a hitchhiker inside our car, a
huge wolf spider had made house over night thinking this might be a great place
to start a new life away from the elements! Thank goodness he was found before
we set off. Excitement aside we said goodbye to a lovely local family who were
our neighbours for the past 3 days, even had a son called Aiden. So Lennox here
we come, with a quick stop at Ballina Bunnings on the way (including the Huge Prawn
next door) Riley said he read it cost $400,000 to refurbish!, we arrived at our
caravan site, and boy was it hot! The boys did there bits and disappeared to
the camp kitchen to indulge in that massive thing called a LCD TV, whilst we
finished setting up. As we drove in we could see the beaches, and the surf
looked like it had already blown out, so we checked out the interweb, made a
call, and ended up meeting this old boy called Terry who does local surf lesson
at Shaws Bay.........the last place we would have thought of going, but with
the incoming tide and a NE breeze, he said we will get some lovely learner
waves, was he right! The boys can kind of basically surf, but it was great for
them to learn the finer details of how to turn and walk the board, including
how to recover if you lose your balance and what to look for in a good wave, we
had a blast. During our stay here we have 2 more sessions over the coming days
so watch this space! Back at the camp site we met our new neighbours from
Melbourne who have two teenage boys and wouldn’t you know it, they do Surf club
and Triathlons. Again great people, we have been so lucky so far as the
neighbours the other side seem pretty feral, but you get that! After a red
sunset the boys disappeared for a paddle in the lake and a ride ‘round the park
after dinner.....life is good.
