29th Nov - Our first Surf

What a magical day. We woke and headed to the beach for a morning run, the fog and eerie stillness made for some amazing sights over the water (apparently a once in a year event). After breakfast we headed for the ‘Mangrove Walk’ where we experienced a thousand and one little soldier crabs marching in huge groups, spinning and burrowing themselves into the sand with each of our steps, the boys had a blast rounding them all up, as did the Oyster catchers! Following our adventure with these little guys we headed into town for more supplies, lunch and then travelled south to the Broulee Island Nature Reserve for a bushwalk. At first we first spotted a gorgeous bay with school children on surf lessons, so we hit the beach for our first swim and surf. These were perfect conditions for any beginner surfer, it was so much fun. We then drove a short distance to the Island walk and begun a circuit all the way around. With the volcanic rock and the sounds of the birds this made for a lovely walk. On the way back we bumped into some locals on the beach for a chat as we were keen to see just how good this place is in the off season. They have been in the neighbourhood for 18 years and have experienced the likes of the WA South West also. In their opinion this was the best spot, with a mild winters and warm summers. Once we returned to the starting point of Broulee Island we hit the beach again as the weather heated up towards the evening. The boys jumped in and surfed alongside some of the Broulee Surf Club Youthies, with waves bigger this time the boys had a blast! After an awesome day and with the weather here still looking great we have decided to stay an extra night!
