2nd Jan – Mutton Bird Island and rain
Luckily we got motivated early this morning; Riley and Bell
went to the beach for a run / walk whilst Chris and Aiden had a lie in. We were
on the road by 8am and the plan was to head over to Mutton Bird Island in Coffs
Harbour then to check out the Sky Deck on the way back, unfortunately we didn’t
see any Mutton Birds but we did see lots of burrows and the odd Seagull tucking
into an egg! He landed on the footpath in front of us, cracked it open and ate
the little chick inside. The boys learnt a quick lessons in the cycle of life! We
found a sign posting the breeding time frames, they were currently incubating
their eggs which is why we didn’t see any birds hanging about! These little guys
migrate to Indonesia in the off season, maybe for some R&R after breeding? It
was a pretty walk on the Island that was easy to access an extremely steep to
walk to the centre, thank goodness someone made a footpath. We then headed back
up the coast to capture the view of Coffs at the Skydeck, it was very cool and
we took an opportunity to have some fun photos! The drive was beautiful and it was
hard to believe that some Banana Plantations were located on these vertical
hills, it would certainly would be a challenge picking bananas on a cliff face!
On the way home we stopped off to checkout some surf spots, we
had to change plans as a storm was coming across the range heading directly for
us. When it did, we pretty much had an afternoon of rain. So what better thing
to do and go and sit in the outdoor spa! With the humidity, towels and clothes
are having hard time drying and we are needing to change more often (due to
smell!) Curry on the table for dinner, the rain continued all night long.
