10th Jan – The Entrance & Somersby
We awoke to find the day cool and overcast, to add insult to
injury there was no surf so it is time to explore some neighbouring areas. We
headed to The Entrance (20 min down the road) and went for a walk along the
Entrance boardwalk to the sea water Baths and the boys jumped in and had a bit
of a swim. It is great to see the boys enjoying walks and exploring the bush with
us and take in everything there is to see and enjoy about our natural
surroundings, from the tiny little shells on the beach, to the birds flying
past and the odd possum! We discovered only 38km away from Nora Head was a set
of Waterfalls called “SOMERSBY”, so we had to go and take a look, not a large
amount of running water over the falls but with the 3 levels to walk to and the
Superb Fairy Wrens feeding their young along away it made for a great
experience, the photos reflect the lovely beauty once again Australia has to
offer.
We read that The Entrance had a Pelican feeding session at
3.30pm so we headed back and just caught the start of it, wow were there some
people ...and Pelicans! We learnt a few interesting facts about our native
Pelicans, they are the largest water bird, they live for around 20 years and the
feeding started from a fish and chip shop employee offering them leftovers and
it continued from there along with the support of the local council. The
Pelican has a wing span of 1.5 to 2 metres and can reach heights of 3000 metres
staying airborne for in excess of 24 hours. Considering how big Pelicans are
they only eat about 1 – 2 kilos per day. The boys managed to pat a Pelican that
came past, they thought it was pretty cool and it gave them another animal
experience to add to their long list.
