24th Nov - Canberra
Officially we started this trip 1 week ago today and to date
we have covered more than 3800kms. We felt tied this morning, these long trips with
little rest on arrival are catching up with us, however we were up early once
again, had some breakfast and made some small changes to the camper following
the storm to try and correct some of the damage before hitting the road for Canberra.
As we passed through Gundagai we headed for the lookout and then dog on the tucker
box just off the Hume Hwy. To set the scene, we’d been having fun finding our
way around ... most of the time ... and sometimes ...when things aren’t going
to plan it can be an interesting conversation. Once we arrived at the dog we
looked at each other and said ‘Is that it?, it looked so much bigger in the flyer!!
Have you ever read the poem?, the kids enjoyed the words http://www.thedogonthetuckerbox.com/poemsfolk_songs
Crossing the border into Canberra the Welcome sign was difficult
to find amongst the others. We decided to head straight for the Visitors Centre
and found there was a lack of accommodation in town due to the ‘Spilt Milk
Festival’ and some bike racing over the weekend. The girl at the info centre
rang around and found us a spot at the Showgrounds, same place we stayed at in
2011. We are staying across the opposite side of the grounds with all the other
caravaners, far away from the 900 Uni Students in tents...it is crazy! By the
time we were setup and settled in we asked the boys what they wanted to do with
half the day remaining..... so it was off to the Royal Mint and then Mum’s
choice the Telstra tower to check out the view. We headed out to dinner for
more entertainment ... now this came in the way of parking in the undercover
car park, which had a maximum height limit of 1.95mt. Somehow we managed to
clip the sign on the way in (due to the lack of drinks in the car fridge) so
called the guy on the intercom and he had to come and escort us so we didn’t damage
the sensors along the roof. We managed to park right near the exit avoiding all
low hanging structures and headed to the huge shopping centre (overwhelming
after a trip across the Nullarbor). To just highlight how ‘fantastic’... not....
our navigation skills were, we found ourselves travelling the wrong way up the
travelator.......clowns!
